Modern Art on BMW Cars Over the Years

Posted by celebrityphotosnews on March 21, 2009

The BMW Art Car Collection, which has been displayed at museums including the Louvre and the Guggenheim Museums in Bilbao and New York, began in 1975, when the French racecar driver and art dealer, Hervé Poulain, persuaded his friend Alexander Calder to paint the BMW 3.0CSL that Mr. Poulain drove at Le Mans.

Mr. Calder, best known for his mobiles, made an earlier venture into transportation in 1973, when he was commissioned by Braniff International to paint a DC-8.

Frank Stella, an auto racing fan, said his graph-paper design was “like a blueprint transferred to the bodywork.”

Ernest Fuchs called his work “Firefox on Harehunt,” and said his piece “represents a hare racing across a motorway at night and leaping over a burning car.”

Robert Rauschenberg incorporated appropriated images, including representations of Bronzino’s “Portrait of a Young Man” and “La Grande Odalisque” by Ingres.
