The site, www.savesavita.com, started recently by the promoters of Savita Bhabhi, offers links to hundreds of web-based tools to help users bypass the ban.
“Call it selective internet censorship, the fact that telecom companies are making decisions for over a million Indian adults makes you wonder how far we are from the Iran and North Korea firewall regimes,” a post on the site said. “This project is an attempt to give a voice to all those SB fans who want to speak out and do something about this act of censorship. The Save Savita project will help other anti-internet censorship projects like Picidae around the world.”
By using proxy servers and anonymisers, a user can confuse an internet service provider about the content s/he is accessing. The ‘save Savita’ project is becoming a rallying point for people interested in voicing their concerns against internet censorship.
Recently, the website posted an article by Sevanti Ninan, a senior journalist who also runs the mediawatch site thehoot.org. “What can be the basis for a request to block? The sovereignty or integrity of India, the defence of India, the security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, and, for ‘preventing incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence relating to above’. Can someone tell me how exactly savitabhabhi.com comes even close to any of these? In fact, our relationships with foreign states couldn’t be friendlier since SB went online,” Sevanti said.
The project is looking for innovative logo designs that depict their struggle against internet censorship in India.
